The Scottish Deerhound is one of the most ancient and aristocratic dog breeds in the world — a large, rough-coated sighthound developed in the Scottish Highlands specifically to course and bring down the red deer, one of the largest and most powerful prey animals in Britain. The breed has been associated with Scottish clan chieftains and nobility for centuries, and was so prized that at one point in Scottish history, no one below the rank of earl was permitted to own one — a restriction that nearly caused the breed's extinction when the clan system collapsed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Sir Walter Scott, who owned a Scottish Deerhound named Maida, called the breed "the most perfect creature of Heaven" and featured Deerhounds prominently in his novels, helping to revive interest in the breed in the 19th century. The Scottish Deerhound is one of the tallest dog breeds in the world, with males standing 30 to 32 inches at the shoulder and weighing up to 110 pounds, yet the breed is renowned for its extraordinarily gentle, dignified, and affectionate temperament — a true gentle giant. Its rough, wiry coat — most commonly seen in blue-gray, brindle, gray, or fawn — provides protection against the cold, wet Highland climate. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1886.
